The effects of oligomers in DMDAAC monomer solution on the copolymerization forming PDA with 30%and 10%cationicity were researched respectively in this paper.Using steped-dissolution method and acetone-water as mixed solvent,the oligomers in DMDAAC monomer solution was classed to different fractions after being extracted.Using the high pure DMDAAC prepared by two-step method as the fundamental monomer and the intrinsic viscosity and residual double-bonds of resultant PDA as testing index,a appropriate polymerization conditions of synthesizing PDA with 30%or 10%cationicty were choosed as the standard polymerization conditions.And then the effect of oligomers of different intrinsic viscosity on the polymerization and the intrinsic viscosity of resultant PDA was investigated by adding them into the DMDAAC monomer solution with different contents in the polymerization.For the polymerization of synthesizing PDA with 30%cationicity,the results showed that the intrinsic viscosity of resultant PDA descended from 11.0 dL/g to 4.44 dL/g,5.02 dL/g, 5.46 dL/g,6.18 dL/g and 6.86 dL/g respectively when the contents of added oligomers with intrinsic viscosity 0.10 dL/g,0.18 dL/g,0.53 dL/g or 0.94 dL/g increased from 0 to 100% respectively.For the polymerization of synthesizing PDA with 10%cationicity,the results showed that the intrinsic viscosity of resultant PDA descended from 19.0 dL/g to 6.68 dL/g, 7.20 dL/g,7.42dL/g and 7.72 dL/g respectively when the contents of added oligomers with intrinsic viscosity 0.10 dL/g,0.20 dL/g,0.34 dL/g or 0.94 dL/g increased from 0 to 100% respectively.It could be seen the intrinsic viscosity of resultant PDA decreased because of the existance of oligomers in DMDAAC monomer solution in the copolymerization.So decreasing or avoiding the generation of oligomers in DMDAAC monomer solution would be conducive to gain PDA with high molecular weight.
