The copolymers of vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS), acrylate and styrene (St) were synthesized by copolymerization in order to modify the traditional St-BA coatings. The organosiloxane part of the polymer was hydrolyzed to form self cross-linked reticulate structure in the using process in order to improve the water-resistant, solvent-resistant and stain-resistance performance. In this dissertation, the copolymer modified by VTMS was synthesized by traditional emulsion polymerization and emulfiser-free emulsion, respectively. The structures and properties of copolymers were studied.(1) Copolymers of St/ethly acrylate (EA)/VTMS, St/butyl acrylate (BA)/VTMS and St/VTMS have been synthesized by emulsion copolymerization using sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and octylphenol polyoxyethylene ether(OP-10) as multiple emulsifiers. The copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric-mass spectroscopy (TG-MS), respectively. The results show that VTMS has copolymerized with St/EA,St/BA and St, the thermal stability of copolymer is enhanced. The polymerization rate increased with increasing polymerization temperature, molar concentration of emulsifier and molar concentration of initiator and decreased with increasing molar concentration of VTMS. The apparent activation energy and kinetic features of the polymerization system were also discussed.(2) Copolymers of St/BA/VTMS and St/VTMS have been synthesized by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. The water absorption and cohesion of the laxes are studied. The results show that VTMS has copolymerized with St/BA and St. The start decomposition temperature of terpolymers was also enhanced with adding VTMS. The polymerization rate increased with increasing polymerization temperature, molar concentration of initiator and decreased with increasing molar concentration of VTMS. The apparent activation energy and kinetic features of the polymerization system were also discussed.
