Beacause of the high content of asphaltenes and resins, high solidifying point and viscosity, the production and transportation of heavy oil are more difficuilt than conventional crude oil. As a result, it is very important to do research on heavy oil viscosity reducer. This paper has described the current situation and methods of viscous oil recovery and transport processes. Based on domestic and foreign literatures, a kind of viscosity reducer for Guer joint movement station of Gudao Oil Production Factory was synthesized and the synthesis conditions were determined. What's more, it was characterized and its performance was evaluated. And lastly, the mechanism of viscosity reduction process using this viscosity reducer was discussed initially.Styrene, butyl methacrylate and acrylamide were used as monomers of polymerization, toluene as solvent and azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator to synthesize oil-soluble viscosity reducer and the results of viscosity reduction were detected. In the experiment, the effect of the monomer ratio, reaction temperature, initiator dosage, reaction time on product performance was discussed. And the optimum reaction conditions were confirmed: reaction temperature 65℃, reaction time 15h, initiator dosage 6‰, the substance mass ratio of methacrylate to styrene to acrylamide 10:9:0.8. The structure and composition of ESA were characterized by IR.The viscosity reduction of viscosity reducer was evaluated on the dosing temperature, dosage, combination of surfactant and compatibility with the demulsifier. The result showed that the combination effect of polymer and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide was better than others. When the mass ratio of polymer to cetyltrimethylammonium was 2:1, the best result was achievedand the maximum product viscosity reduction rate could reach about 70%. Viscosity-temperature test and rheological test were made on different water content crude oil with and without viscosity reducer and the effects of different amounts of viscosity reducer on demulsification experiment were discussed. The result indicated that synthetic viscosity reducer can obtain better results than those available from market, and it can compatible well with demulsifier.Finally, the mechanism of the viscosity reduction with oil-soluble viscosity reducer was explorated initially. The results showed that the viscosity was reduced through the interaction of viscosity reducer with resinand and asphaltene. At the same time, the molecular weight, the polar group and the ester chain also have effect on the viscosity reduction.
