Compared to power activated carbon, shaped activated carbon had the advantages of high strength, easy to use. The paper prepared polyurethane based foam carbon with the commercial coca-nut activated carbon as raw material; and prepared wood-based column shaped activated carbon used wood-based power activated carbon as raw material, CMC and modified starch as the binder, respectively.In the present work, polyurethane was used as substrate, commercial coca-nut activated carbon was added during the preparation of the polyurethane foam, then heat treated to prepare foamed carbon. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for pore structure and surface morphology observation. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted for the analysis of thermal behavior of the prepared carbon foam. Adsorption performance was evalued using phenol, methylene blue and iondine as model compounds.The column shaped activated carbon were prepared using CMC and modified starch as adhesive, respectively. The influence of various preparation parameters such as carbonisation temperature, the amount of the binders were investigated. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm was used for pore structure. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted for the analysis of thermal behavior of the prepared activated carbon. Adsorption performance was evalued using toluene, methylene blue and iondine as model compounds.The result of polyurethane based foamed carbon preparation revealed that under optimum condition, the BET specific surface area of carbon foam could reach to 655.0 m2/g, and iodine adsorption value 525.2 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption capacity decreased to a less content compared with that of the raw carbon. The adsoption performance of PU/AC-1-n (polyether to MDI mass ratio=10:9) is much higher than other PU/AC-1-n (polyether to MDI mass ratio=10:7)samples. SEM result indicated that the existence of polyurethane located at the entrance of the macropore of AC, but it has little influence on the adsorption performance, especially the adsorption of microporous substance. Contrast the two kinds of foam carbon with different preparation formulations, PU/AC-1-n is much superior. For PU/AC-1-n,polyurethane were closed linked with activated carbon and result of the better strength. The result of thermal analysis revealeded that high adsorptive carbon foam combing the polyurethane and activated carbon under lower temperature.The result of CMC-column shaped activated carbon preparation revealed that with the rising carbonisation temperature, each performance of the shaped activated carbon were declining. The best performance presented to the carbonisation temperature with 200℃. With the increasing of the content of CMC, each performance were gradually decreasing; but the strength of prepared activated carbon were gradually increasing; the removal of toluene were decreasing. The removing rate of tolune could reach to 65.5% when the CMC content was 10W%, we could obtained it was the optimum condition when the CMC content was 10W/%, carbonisation temperature was 200℃.The result of starch-column shaped activated carbon preparation revealed that with the rising carbonisation temperature, each performance of the shaped activated carbon were first increased then declined. The best performance presented to the carbonisation temperature with 250℃. With the increasing of the content of modified starch, each performance of molded activated carbon were gradually decreasing; but the strength of prepared molded activated carbon were first increasing then declining when the content of modified starch was 55%; the removal of toluene were decreasing. The removing rate of tolune could reach to 56.2%, we could obtained it was the optimum condition when the carbonisation temperature was 200℃, the modified starch content was 40W/%.By the comprehensive comparision, polyurethane based foamed carbon would be of great potential in wide fields because of diversity of mix design, and could make into arbitrary shape. For column shaped activated carbon formed by adhesive, the effect of binder selection and content of binder played an important part in final performance of shaped activated carbon. It would be the emphasis of the future that how to select suitable binder and suitable additive amount of binder.
