Hydraulic supports are the key equipment in the fully mechanized coal face; they have function of supporting the roof, maintaining the workspace and pushing the shearer and conveyor. As the key factor for comprehensive mechanized coal mining, research on hydraulic supports has important significance for the development of comprehensive mechanized coal mining. The traditional design method of hydraulic supports based on experience and analogy, this pattern needs several steps as follows: investigation and analysis—conceptual design—composition—design—trial manufacture—experiment—setting—production. This pattern has long development period, high cost and may influence the quality of hydraulic supports for inadequate experiment. Technology combining the virtual prototype and finite element can overcome the deficiency in traditional design. The virtual prototype and finite element technology can help developing the new product fast and reducing the cost. This paper utilize Pro/E to build the 3D model and use ANSYS to analyze the strength of the whole hydraulic supports, analyzing the stress distribution in three dangerous working conditions including top beam with offset load, top beam torsion and base torsion, this can improve the design precision and select the suitable material. Taking measures in the positions that have maximum stress; This can improve the stress distribution and provide reference for the future design. In the finite element analysis for the whole hydraulic supports, the treatment of pin connection is always the focus and difficulty, the treatment methods are as follows: bonding method, constraint equation method, coupling degree of freedom method and contact treatment method. Which method will be used in the treatment of pin connection problem completely according to the designer's comprehension about the problem, and the bonding method and constraint equation method are the most commonly used methods. This paper uses these two methods separately to treat the pin connection problem, and compare the analysis results, and then obtained the best method to treat the pin connection with finite element analysis. This paper combining the virtual prototype and finite element technology to do some explorative research on the hydraulic supports strength, hoping to do further analyses and improvements and providing reference for the future finite element analysis of the hydraulic supports.
