In this paper, we applied remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS), as well as MODIS data system, to explore the assessment about the status and dynamics of the different types of the key ecosystem functional regions at regional and national scales, and analyze the regional-scale assessment of ecosystem services and ecological protection in China in the direction of needs and applications. And then established the basic geographic information database, remote sensing and socio-economic database of 46 key ecosystem functional regions based on MODIS data. Based on these databases, the article analyzed the ecological status and change of the key ecosystem functional regions used the data at 2001,2004,2006, and 2010.The results show:(1) Overall, the ecological functions in key ecosystem functional regions of water supply conservation slightly improved. The water conservation capacity of source regions in Beijing-Tianjin-source is relatively poor. The water supply conservation ability of the most of the regions is in the middle level, such as:Yajing-source, Nanzhong, Daxiaoxinganling, and Changbai Mountains. The water supply conservation ability in Altai, Sanjiang source, Zoige, Maqu, Tianshan Mountains, Qilian Mountains, Nanling, the East River source, Hainan Island in the central Mountains is strong or very strong.(2) The ecological functions in key ecosystem functional regions of water and soil conservation kept stable and slightly improved. The capability of water and soil conservation of Taihang Mountains, Loess Plateau, karst, Dabie Mountains, the Sichuan-Yunnan dry and hot valley had improved, while the Taihang Mountains, the Dabie Mountains'capacity had larger grown.(3) The key ecosystem functional regions of wind break and sand fixation remained stable, The capacity of Hulunbeier prairiedecreased slightly. Overall, the key ecosystem function of the value of comprehensive assessment about wind break and sand fixation is generally low, which should be increased.(4) The biological diversity protection capacity in the key ecosystem function slightly reduced, and ability of Wuling Mountains reduced shapeliest. Most of the mountainous regions, such as Qingba Mountains, the northwest of Tibetan Mountains, Ili Tianshan Mountains, tropical rain forest and seasonal rain forest in Xishuangbanna, Sichuan and Yunnan forests, the southeastern of Tibetan Mountains, Qionglai Mountains, Southwest of Gui limestone, Wuling Mountains, were in a strong and highly level. (5)Overall, the status of ecological function of the key ecological function areas of flood storage capacity remained stable. The capacity of the region along Huaihe river reduced the level of flood storage from the general to the weaker level. The ecological function capacity of South East, the Sanjiang Plain, Liao River Delta, Songnen were in the general level and the strong level. Donting lake and Poyang lake were in a very strong level.With more in-depth study in ecosystem service functions at home and abroad, based on priority functional zones implementation of the regional management as well as key ecological function as a platform will become an important trend for ecological protection and construction. Establishment of MODIS based dynamic database of ecological status in regional scale of the nation, as well as developing annual dynamic assessment, was conducive to control the changes in the national ecological status and spatial situation in macro view, to apply technical support of planning, assessment and management of the key ecological function areas.
