Porphyrins widely exist in the natural world. They have special physiological function and biological activity, and are attractive. Porphyrins are extensively used in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, coordination chemistry, material science, pharmaceutical chemistry, electrochemistry, bionics, optical physics and chemistry, catalyst and many other fields.As compounds of conjugated macrocycle, the ring of the porphyrin has twelve carbon atoms around it and may have different substituents. The materials of liquid crystal of porphyrins can be synthesized by the medium of changing chains of the porphyrin ring, the lengths of chain, and metallic ion in complexes.meso-tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphyrinatozinc (TPTBPZn) was synthesized by phenylacetic zinc and phthalimide. Three new meso-tetrakis(4-alkylaminosulfophenyl)tetrabenzoporphyrins were synthesized by acidification, chlorosulfonation and amination of TPTBPZn. New complexes were prepared by these porphyrins and metallic ions. There were 15 new compounds synthesized, including mso-tetrakis(4-N-dodecylaminosulfophenyl)tetrabenzopor-phyrin,meso-tetrakis(4-N-tetradecylaminosulfophenyl)tetrabenzoporphyrin, meso-tetrakis(4-N-hexadecylaminosulfophenyl)tetrabenzoporphyrin and their corresponding Fe, Co, Ni, Zn complexes. These compounds were characterized with UV-vis spectrum, IR spectrum and 1HNMR spectrum. Their liquid crystalline properties were determined with polarization microscope and Differential Scanning Calorimeter.
