Porphine as a cyclic compound with conjugated system has twelve carbon active sites which can link different substituents and obtain porphyrin compound. The central nitrogen atoms may coordinate with metal ion to generate corresponding metalloporphyrin. Different porphyrin materials can be synthesized through changing the carbon chain type, length and the center metal ions. Porphyrins and their metal complexes have many special physical and chemical properties, and have broad prospects in the application of liquid crystal materials.meso-tetraphenylporphyrin was first synthesized in this paper.meso-tetrakis(4-chlorosulfophenyl)porphyrin was prepared by the tetraphenylporphyrin and chlorosulfonic acid. The reactions meso-tetrakis(4-chlorosulfophenyl)porphyrin and octylamine, decylamine, dodecylamine, tetradecylamine, hexadecylamine, octadecylamine got meso-tetrakis(4-octylaminosulfophenyl)porphyrin, meso-tetrakis(4-decylaminosulfophenyl)porphyrin, meso-tetrakis(4-dodecylaminosulfophenyl)porphyrin, meso-tetrakis(4-tetradecylaminosulfophenyl)-porphyrin, meso-tetrakis(4-hexadecylaminosulfophenyl)porphyrin, meso-tetrakis(4-octadecyl-aminosulfophenyl)porphyrin, which were then reacted with metallic ions (Ni, Cd, Cu, Zn) to get18species of metal complexes. There were13new compounds synthesized, including meso-tetrakis(4-tetradecylaminosulfophenyl)porphyrin,meso-tetrakis(4-hexadecylaminosulfophenyl)-porphyrin,meso-tetrakis(4-octadecylaminosulfophenyl)porphyrin and their corresponding Ni, Cd, Cu, Zn complexes. All the compounds were characterized and analyzed by UV-Vis,1HNMR and IR. Liquid crystal properties of compounds were investigated by polarization microscope and DSC. meso-tetrakis(4-dodecylamnosulfophenyl)porphyrin,meso-tetrakis(4-tetradecylaminosulfophenyl)porphyrin,meso-tetrakis(4-hexadecylaminosulfophenyl)porphyrin, meso-tetrakis(4-octadecylaminosulfophenyl)porphyrin and their corresponding Ni, Cd complexes exhibit the speciality of liquid crystal behavior. They are both the enantiotropic type of liquid crystal.
