Shandong province is a main grain production zone of China, with a long history of farming. In recent years, its agricultural economy has grown rapidly and scored world-renowned achievements:its agricultural added-value reached RMB214.66 billion Yuan, a year-on-year rise of 2.5% in 2010;its forestry added-value totaled 6.07 billion Yuan in 2010, up 4.9% than the previous year; animal husbandry added-value equaled to 72.7 billion Yuan, an increase of 4.2%; its added-value in fishery reached 52.1 billion Yuan, up 4.9%; the added-value in its services for farming, forestry, husbandry and fishery totaled 13.25 billion Yuan, up 9.9%. At the same time, environment has been severely damaged due to the great importance of agriculture to human beings as well as the dependence of agricultural productivity upon natural conditions. Noticeably, while the province's agricultural economy enjoyed a boom in recent years, mainly the upgrading of integration and technology-intensiveness, its agricultural ecology has been dampened seriously due to the frequent use of pesticide, chemical fertilizers and other production materials, as well as farmers' irrational production and operation behaviors. The agricultural pollution to environment is becoming more and more rampant and threatening to go out of control, so this paper explores the relationship between farmers' operational behavior, economic development and agricultural pollution.First, this paper surveys the studies on agricultural non-point pollution both from home and abroad, based on which we raises several concepts like agriculture, agricultural pollution, farmers' behavior and economic development, and summarizes a couple of classic theories on farmers' behavior and economic development.Second, the paper elaborates the status quo of agricultural pollution in Shandong province and analyses the relationship connection between farmer's behavior and agricultural pollution. We employ data from 2000-2009, draw on deviation method and coefficient of aviation method to measure the share of each factor in agricultural pollution. We also established a new agricultural pollution measurement index. Then, we analyze the effect of economic development on agricultural pollution empirically by using statistics and data of Shandong province and econometrical methods like co-integration and Grandeur causal test.
