In laser cladding procedure, clad material and a thin layer of substrate material are melted by using high-power-density laser beam to form a nonporous and crack-free coating. There is a good metallurgical bonding between the substrate and the coating. It has become one of the most advanced modern surfacing technologies. As the laser cladding process is a multi-parameter coupled non-linear process, it is difficult to meet with the high-precision and high-quality requirements with traditional control method. In this paper, new control technology was introduced into the procedure of laser cladding, and the control of laser cladding process and its detection hardware system are investigated. The main achievements are as follows:1. Based on the comparison of various laser cladding control methods, this paper a scheme of laser cladding process control system and its hardware structure are designed.2. In order to measure the laser cladding pool size, a real-time detection system based on an integrated color CCD camera is established,, which mainly consists of Color CCD one machine, neutral attenuation film, image acquisition card, a decoder and a computer component. With the developed test software system the measurements of the point-of-pool morphology and the detection of real-time tracking are implemented.Results show that the system can get precise size of the pool.3. With this real-time detection system based on CCD, effects of process parameters such as scanning speed, powder feed rate and defocus on the width of the melt pool in the single-pass laser cladding are investigated.
