Currently, computer application is very popular in the mould & dies companies, and the 3D design has become an important development direction. However, 2-D engineering drawing is the most common means to express technology information, and 2-D drawing is widely used in the mould & dies companies .For 2D drawing, the work of dimensioning and labeling is time consuming, and lowers the design efficiency greatly. Hence, to sdudy automatic generation of 2-D engineering drawing for mould components is an important research work.Through investigation and analysis, we find that many mould & die components have similarity in certain extent, apart from some structure features. Based on this similarity, the author has developed an auto-dimensioning module for mould components.According to the requirements of mould industry, the 2-D drawing auto-generation function is realised on the platform of UG NX 4.0 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, and the package of UG Open API is used as well. In the development of the module, the characteristics of dimension and tolerance are analysed, and the existing template files adopted. Foe the purpose of automatic generation of 2D drawings, the 3-D component is expressed as a so called attribution graph. To find the most similar component, similarity matching is carried out in the developed algorithm. Consequently, automatic drawing and dimensioning for the new part can be realised based on the information kept in the well-drawn and well-dimensioned template file. The realized functions for the auto-drawing and dimensioning of mould & die components include sheet size selection, layout loading, views adding, dimensioning and labling.The test results indicate that the developed module is suitable for most of the mould parts, and has good prosperity to be used in production.
