With land solid mineral resources dwindling and mining costs rising rapidly, marine solid mineral resources has been more and more attracted, in which the most representative is the deep sea cobalt rich crusts. Whether domestic or foreign mining cobalt rich crust already become a key development direction. The first step to obtain the cobalt resource is to separate and break it from the deep seabed. The crushing head is a key component of mining. The correct crushing head design is the basis of efficient operation of the mining system.The domestic and foreign status of cobalt crusts mining has been analyzed. By several typical rock cutting mechanism analysis and research, the appropriate mechanism of cobalt crusts has been determined. The physical properties of cobalt crust has been analyzed and explained, and the parameters has been compared with the simulation material of cobalt crust. According to the physical properties of cobalt crusts, a broken head has been designed, and by the means of software LS-DYNA,the broken simulation research has been developed. Through the simulation,the cutting resistance Fc, feeding resistance Ff and lateral resistance Fs of the crushing head in the X, Y, Z three directions have been analyzed.They constitute of main forces of crushing head in the working process. lateral resistance of the Z axis direction indicates that there is the axial force in cutting process. According to simulation results the crushing head of cobalt crust has been designed and made. Finally, the test system of the cobalt crust broken has been built in the lab and the operation parameter experiment has been carried out.Via a high-speed camera, the pick of crushing process has been recorded and the mechanism of breaking cobalt crust has been verified. Experiment on the cutter tooth of the roller and the crushing head functional test are both conducted.With different parameters including rotational speed, feed rate and cutting depth during the cutting process,the material is collected. The granularity distribution of the material also has been analyzed.According to the analysis, rational parameters are suggested. Rotating speed of the crushing head is 70r/min,cutting depth is 40 mm,and feeding rate is 0.2m/s.
