Due to rapid development of economy, construction of cities, and sharply increased number of cars, China, a developing country, is facing many increasingly serious problems, such as traffic congestion, accidents and pollution. We can learn a lesson from developed countries that an effective method to solve those problems is to take development of public transportation as a priority. Many developed countries have been researching and developing ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) since 1980s, and it has been the direction of transportation system in 21st century. The beginning of Chinese ITS study, however, was later than those countries, but thanks to the the application of GIS (Geographic Information System), GIS-T (Geographic Information System for Transportation) has been well improved.My research in this thesis focuses on inquiry of intelligent information and collection of real-time data in ITS, and a PTIS(Public Transport Information System) with inquring and analyzing function is designed. VB programming language and Map X plug-in are applied in this system which bases on the present situation of transportation in Kaifeng. This system can provide relevant information and assistant decision for people's transport and management of traffic.In this thesis, the shortest time of total journey and the least transfer times are calculated to help people choose the best bus route, which provides highly efficent service of assistant decision.Database is the core of system data organization. The spatial data and attribute data in this PTIS are Tab data format, and five datasets (or layers )– point, line, surface and annotation– are stored in a same Tab data source. And bus line datasets and annotation datasets for names of schools, new villages, rivers, lakes and streets are introduced into the database as background layers.It is very necessary to update real-time data for a PTIS. Our country has been researching the co-application of GPS (Global Position System) and GIS. The assumption that GPS can be used in receiving and disposing real-time data has been made in this paper, so the system users can acquire real-time positions of buses so that arrival time of buses will be estimated and condition of traffic congestion can be analyzed.Based on the present situation of economy and transportation in Kaifeng, this PTIS consists of vehicle system, information center, PC terminal and platform terminal. The system function which is designed for transport users at PC terminal realizes atlas display, inquiry of bus stations, best choice of bus routes and update of real-time data. Certainly, there is still much room for this system to be improved and then it can be practically used in public trsportation.As technology continues to develop, more new technologies will have applied to PTIS, while the GIS will also display its powerful graphical and geographical data analysis and...
