With development of the global economy and the surge in car ownership, the problem of traffic jam is more and more serious. The solution of traffic jam, as an important research topic of public concern, attracts the universal attention of the society and the government. The development of intelligent transportation system is an effective measure to solve the problem of traffic jam. Intelligent carpool taximeter is the research fronts and hotspots of intelligent transportation system and intelligent vehicle system and it is also one of the effective techniques to solve frequent traffic jams.At present, taxi carpool is not allowed, and thus the number of passengers is usually less than the maximum number of the car, which causes a waste of space. Actually the traffic transportation department could allow taxi carpool at the busy streets and time. It could also send authorized carpool signals to taxis which are running on busy streets at a appropriate time and cancel authorized carpool signals when taxis leave busy streets or the busy time is gone. By this way it can maximum the utilization of taxis and improve traffic condition. Certainly, for the interests of passenger, this taximeter realize the discount billing function in order to make passengers pleasure with carpool.This paper designs a taximeter which has vehicle location, electronic consuming, information providing, and multi-channel billing functions. Based on traditional taximeter, CDMA(3G communication) module is added to the taximeter. Moreover, a multi-channel billing function. CDMA module is used for the communication between taxi and traffic transportation department, and a GPS module is used for taxi location. The traffic transportation department can send authorized carpool signals and cancel authorized carpool signals at a appropriate time via the CDMA module. The RFID device sends passengers'card information to traffic transportation department to settle accounts through the CDMA network. When taxis come to the area without CDMA signals or low CDMA signals, taxi drivers would ask passengers to pay in cash. The major controller of this taximeter is a microcontroller as well as the traditional taximeter. But this taximeter adopts the PIC microcontroller which has more powerful functions to communicate with CDMA module and GPS module. This taximeter has another function called discount billing and can display bills for carpool passengers. At the end of this paper, we introduce the design of taxi management system, and at last conclusions and future work on intelligent carpool taximeter are introduced.
