With China rapid economic development and accelerated urbanization, the increasing scale of cities, the phenomenon of urban traffic congestion is becoming more and more serious. Priority to development of urban public transport is the way to solve the problem of urban road congestion fundamental, with its large-capacity public transport, take the road less resources, economic and other characteristics of effective mitigation of the urban traffic pressure. The layout of urban public transportation network affects travel conditions of the residents, scientific and reasonable to the public transportation network optimization, under the conditions of limited resources can ease the urban traffic pressure, improve the efficiency of public transport operators to improve bus services and increased passenger load factors. Traditional public transportation network optimization technology there are many inadequacies, traffic planners can not do spatial relationship analysis and effective decision-making. Spatial analysis of geographic information system (GIS) technology for the development of public transportation network optimization technology brings hope.In this paper, geographic information system (GIS) development, combined with the optimization of urban public transportation network characteristics, geographic information system (GIS) in the public transportation network optimization design of in-depth study. Based on the operational characteristics of urban public transport combined with the existing public transportation network optimization model for urban public transport network optimization of the GIS software, data structure design, model and operating procedures of the mechanism, so that GIS technology to better serve the urban public transport planning.Firstly, the public transportation network optimization technology at home and abroad carried out research and analysis, and puts forward the research method. Public transportation network optimization described in detail the content, principles and objectives, GIS functions, composition and the need for the introduction of GIS.Secondly, the analysis of the main characteristics of transit network to explore a suitable public transportation network in the GIS software to analyze the data structure, the establishment of the bus on the basis of GIS data structure. And in Jinan City, Jinn City, the bus was established based on the database, including the traffic zone level, urban road network layer, network layer on foot, bus lines and bus station floor level. Trip Characteristics of Jinan City residents carried out a detailed analysis of passenger demand forecasting model in detail, and GIS-based distribution model of passenger volume, Jinn proposed distribution scheme of passenger volume.Finally, the Jinan Public Transport carried out a detailed analysis, the use of GIS in the public transportation network optimization model based on the public transportation network to optimize the design of Jinan City, and the optimized transit network evaluation. The results show that the optimized transit network to better meet the travel needs of residents.
