With the increasing functions of relay protection equipment and the heavy task of fault data analysis, and with more and more system management functions, engineers hope that through good human-machine interface to monitor the protection and so on. This paper discusses a scheme which uses handheld devices to implement HMI. Because of operating system diversity, the design goal of this artcle is to develop universal software system.The use of touch screen and small screen will increase the burden on users without a good interface management. With the diversity of business need, using handheld devices to monitor relay protection equipment and other operations have some drawbacks. How to realize the automation of business management will be discussed.The structure of the system based handheld and configuration of functions are described in detail. The system implements the functions as dynamic data monitoring, setting inquiry, recorded wave inquiry and so on. Meanwhile,build the environments for application program in WinCE, Linux operating system.Combining with the user'requirements and the interface design principles, interface management mechanism is described in detail. Established the management module for business process, realized the customization of flow of business, according to the users'requirements the modules have different function are integrated into a group. The task can be completed in one-time. Business process management based on workflow technology, the article designed the engine of workflow.The article introduced the application of handheld device on HMI system for relay protection equipment. In order to achieve an universal software system, proposed a method to build the system.
