With the common practice to use electronic control unit (ECU) in automotive applications especially in engine control, MCD technology, which means calibration, real-time measurement and diagnostics, has become the key technology for the development of automotive industry. Nowadays, the popular solutions for MCD technology are mainly from aboard. This paper focused on the development of an efficient MCD tool to serve the automotive engine manufacturers of China. The design and development of a MCD tool was proposed in this paper. The main task includes four parts:PC software tool design, ECU driver module design, system performance testing and engine application. To realize the functions of calibration and real-time measurement, CAN calibration protocol CCP was used. The independence of the MCD system and specific ECU application was achieved by loading ECU description file. The main user interfaces provided by the MCD tool include operator validation, MAP calibration, real-time measurement, simple EOL function integrated and Flash operation. Further more, the MCD system provides the interface for ASAP2 standard ECU description file A2L.The diagnostic tool for automobile ECU application based on SAE J1939 specification was developed. The application layer functions, diagnostic task trigger, network management and malfunction indicator control were discussed. At last, by mathematic modeling and related testing, system efficiency and influential factors were analyzed and the ways to improve efficiency were obtained. The MCD software modules of specific ECU application for common-rail system were developed. Bench experiment shows that the system is an effective tool for automobile ECU development.
