Firstly, this thesis analyzes function characteristics of the traditional,digital and smart distribution substations. In the traditional distribution substations, devices configurated oriented bay have no interoperability, and cannot share information, which results in lacking of overall coordination and function optimization. The digital distribution substations have solved the above mentioned problems, but functions do not realize intelligence based on the sharing and utilization of information. And the smart distribution substations focus on application and integration of advanced functions, which are in need of strong support of protective and controlling unites based on data sharing on process bus. Hence, it is necessary to improve performance of protective and controlling units through data sharing on process bus.The perquisite and key technology of data sharing on process bus is real-time and reliable communication. Secondly, this thesis evaluates and analyzes communication characteristics of process bus oriented bay and location, from a perspective of improving performance of protective and controlling, in conditions of power frequency and transisent traveling waves signal transmission, and talks about the existing problems and requirement of process bus oriented function, and analyzes application of transisent traveling waves in smart distribution substations.At the last, this thesis extends the research on the key practicability problems of data sharing on process bus in smart distribution substation, including two fields: data sampling units-Merging unit design and study of under frequency load shedding sheme based on data sharing on process bus in smart distribution substation.
