The people's demands on living environment become higher with the development of society and the traditional forms and plants of landscape are unable to meet the aesthetic needs of the people, while colorful plants are getting popular due to composition diversity and different colors has become the new darling of current urban greening with broad prospects for development. The applications of colorful plants in have developed rapidly in Baoding since recent years, but there are some problems such as poor in species or improper configuration, etc; this paper carried out a research on germplasm and landscape application of colorful plants in urban green area of Baoding and provided summary analysis as well as solutions of existing problems, which provided references to the development of colorful plants and landscape greening construction of Baoding and surrounding area or even those of Hebei Province.This paper investigated the status including species, adaptability, application methods and the match with other landscape elements of colorful plants in green areas of main roads, squares, parks & residential areas, and affiliated areas in Baoding through field research with photographs, records and samples, and the results were as follows: (1) Color leaf plant species in Baoding: the green areas in Baoding had colorful plants of 66 species of 42 genera of 30 families, including 39 arbors accounting for 59.09%, 17 shrubs accounting for 25.76%, 3 vines accounting for 4.55%, 7 herbs accounting for 10.6%; 12 evergreen colorful plants accounting for 18.18 %, 54 deciduous colorful plants accounting for 81.82%; 10 spring colorful plants accounting for 15.38%, 37 autumn colorful plants accounting for 56.92%, 27 ever-colorful plants accounting for 41.54%; 57 monochromatic leaf plants accounting for 87.7%, 4 multi-color multichromatic leaf plants accounting for 6.15%, 4 edging leaf plants accounting for 6.15%; 26 yellow (golden) leaf plants accounting for 40%, purple (red) leaf plants accounting for 44.62%, 10 multichromatic leaf plants accounting for 15.38%. (2) Adaptability of colorful plants in Baoding: colorful plants in green areas of Baoding had 35 native species accounting for 53.03%, and 31 imported species accounting for 46.97%. Most native species were growing well, while a few imported species showed poor adaptability. There were 33 species with good adaptability accounting for 50%, 31 species with moderately good adaptability accounting for 46.97%, 1 species with acceptable adaptability accounting for 1.5% and 1 species with bad adaptability accounting for 1.5%. (3) Applications of colorful plants in Baoding: there were various applications of colorful plants in urban green areas of Baoding including isolated planting, linear planting, clump planting, group planting & parcel planting, lump planting and foundation planting , vertical greening; and the applications matched well with the elements in landscape such as water, roads, rocks, constructions, etc. (4) Problems in the application of colorful plants in Baoding: lack of diversity; fewer applications of native plants; poor adaptability of a few colorful plants; unreasonable configuration of colorful plants; inadequate conservation management. (5)The solutions to above problems were as follows: strengthening the domestication and increasing diversity; making full use of native colorful plants and reflecting the local characteristics; strengthening the cooperation of colleges and enterprises, selecting plants scientifically and rationally; optimizing the configuration, enhancing the artistic effect of color leaf plant landscape; strengthening the conservation management and improving the ornamental value of color leaf plant landscape.
