Though industrial revolution made human gradually liberate from the heavy manual labor, human beings are still suffering the psychological pressures from outside .leisure, as an important means to human body to adjust its balance and restore normal function, its most functional nature continues playing an important role today. Now days, urban residents'increasing leisure time, professional trends of leisure activities, the arrival of an aging society and the development of information technology are all influencing humans'way of leisure.Urban public spaces act as an important platform for urban residents'public life and service life of urban residents is the core content. After the war, the construction of urban leisure space is subject to market regulation and tend to some recreational and competitive places with high interests and higher returns. Though passive recreation exits all the time, it is failed to get attention. Functional area method, widely used in designs of urban public space, not only was contrary to the behavior diversity but also neglected the support of urban public space for passive recreative behavior.As the most important human settlements, city also undertake urban residents'life of leisure. As a material carrier of improving the quality of leisure, not only the current urban design should have more leisure spaces with a wide range of adaptability at the mesoscopic level, but also the city's overall environment should reflect the casual atmosphere as requested at the macro level, as if leisure has already become an important attribute of modern urban organism.With a combination of leisure and environmental behavior research, this paper started from the social attributes of space and study urban public spaces with function of universal leisure. The content of study focused on the following two aspects: First is the study of behavioral characteristics of passive recreation; Second, is the study of environments'characteristics of urban public spaces which support passive recreation behavior.This paper is consists of four parts :The first chapter elaborated the concept of passive recreation and urban public space, proposing the features of passive recreational behavior and analyzing the necessary connection between passive recreation and urban public space. After analyzing the current status of urban public space, this paper Pointed out some exiting problems.Chapter two discusses the theory of recreation and analyzed how the current transformation of urban public life is impacting urban public spaces. By analyzing the distribution of urban leisure time and mentality of leisure activities, this paper proposed that passive recreation is an important recreation in current urban public space, which can be divided into wait and see, communication, recreation, audio-visual meditation based on five categories of behavior.The third chapter took the passive recreation behavior as a research perspective and analyzed leisure meaning and main leisure features of different types of urban public spaces. Meanwhile, it addressed the material elements and spiritual elements which can stimulate passive recreation behavior in urban public spaces.Chapter IV, with an integration of the first two chapters of passive recreation behavior and the study of urban public space , it proposed some public space design principles based on passive recreation behaviors, which were named as the principle of permeability, adaptability principles, the principles of diversity and accessibility principles. Under the guidance of the basic principles , this paper suggested some representative proposed design methods targeting at five kinds of passive recreational behaviors. Finally, at the last part, this article casted the outlook of the future development of urban public space based on passive recreation and the existing limitations.
