During the rapid urbanization, there is a differentiation occurred in Jinan which oriented by income and housing type, what's more, the social conflicts following is on the horizon, if it isn't give a timely attention, there may cause social problems. Residential differentiation is a double-edged sword, a reasonable differentiation not only can reflect the value of land use, but also the housing needs of different social strata will be solved. At the same time, an excessive division will not only cause a divergence on social, environmental resources, also it can increase the isolation between different classes and contradictions, and even lead to social hostility and conflict. Thus a research on the differentiation index for Jinan is very important. If the research is given seasonably, a lot of problem will be cured, such as seizing the opportunity to grasp the problem, saving management costs, mostly it can instruct the city to be healthy and harmonious.In this paper, I made a research structure under a system study on the differentiation index of residential space both by domestic and internal scholars. At the macro level of the measurement, I calculated the index of residential space, which based on housing prices and residential category from 2008 to 2010 of Jinan. During the research I achieved a quantitative variation of the longitudinal comparative study. At the micro level, a social survey was taken among five community, Then I used factor analysis and ANOVA to analyze social differentiation among affordable housing, low-end residential, mid-range residential, high-end residential, traditional residential. Finally, I made several suggestions to cope with the differentiation of residential space of Jinan, which from a perspective of urban planning.The core conclusion of this study is the following:(1) The differentiation of residential space is not only a phenomenon of residential space layout, also it is a process which different professional background, cultural orientation, income level of residents tend to keep together, living space distribution tends to be relatively centralized, independent.(2) The differentiation of residential space of Jinan results in the housing market mechanism and the behavior of urban residents select home.(3) On one hand, the differentiation of residential space of Jinan is a process of coupling a variety of factors, on the other, it is a self-organization and his-organization intertwined process.(4) Through a measurement on both the spatial differentiation and the social differentiation of the differentiation of residential space of Jinan. The result shows the spatial differentiation and the social differentiation dose not completely superimposed. What's more the result shows there is no significant segregation in Jinan.(5) The calculation results about index show that it has no serious differentiation in Jinan, but the differentiation by economic has begun emerged, residential segregation between rich and poor are two significant classes. From the point of dynamic results, there is an addition in both lower class and upper class. This phenomenon shows a strengthening trend is occurring between lower class and upper class which maybe worse.(6) Truly, the phenomenon of the differentiation of residential space is inevitable in the market-economy, what's more, it is a reflection of urban land. Although it is impossible eliminate residential differentiation completely, but it is feasible to reduce the influence of residential differentiation.The main innovations of this study is the following:(1) The indicator has a new ideaIn this paper, I choose the indicators which can reflect economic conditions, housing type, age, location, environmental factors etc. Also, I enriched the index of residential differentiation about community identity and community contacts. Thus, it can reflect the phenomenon of the differentiation of residential space of Jinan better.(2) This research discussed a new method to calculatate the index of residential differentiation, which included socio-economic characteristics, community identity and community contacts. There are a lot of limitations in existing researches, in which its data was based on economic and social demographic. The reason is that there are some differences between the answer of calculation and the distribution of the actual residential space. The key point is that residential space is a variation of space and society, residential segregation and social differentiation is not entirely consistent. Previous studies neglected the most important and difficult factors which arised by the social differentiation. This research tried calculating the index of residential differentiation, which led by socio-economic characteristics and assist by community identity and community contacts.(3) This research discussed the quantitative method based on residential differentiation longitudinal comparative study.Mostly, domestic research focused on the static studies about single city, while dynamic study focused on qualitative description. In this research, I collected the data of three years which from 2008 to 2010. Thus, a dynamic comparison was implemented for the index of residential differentiation initially.
