With the economic development of China, the traffic has also gotten a leap of progress and road traffic is becoming with each passing day. Our traffic building is facing two major bottlenecks. One is the scarcity of quality natural stone and the other is lack of pavement structure. Finding alternative aggregate of quality natural stone and more appropriate pavement structure is a urgent job. Asphalt Treated Base could make up shortcomings of semi-rigid base pavement. Steel slag is better than limestone in some respect. Steel slag reserves of our country have reached 200 million tons and each year it will increase 100 million tons. Slag accumulation occupied a large number of enterprises space and made pollution to the environment. If steel slag could become asphalt pavement aggregate, its using efficiency could be improved much and enterprises'stress should be reduced.Firstly, performances of steel slag are tested. Its chemical composition is clear and content of SiO2 is 13.35%. So it is alkaline Stone. The photos of steel slag tell us there are many porous on its surface. Even prolong test time to 10m, its adhesion is still level5. And its crushing value is 13.2%. Its bulk relative density is high as 3.25. In the last respects, steel slag is better than limestone. But its water absorption is high as to 2.8%. Its particulate is very excellent and flakiness content is 4.6%.So steel slag has the potential becoming high-quality aggregate.Then, the grading designs are finished. We get optimum oil-stone ratios. We could know the difference of optimum oil-stone ratios due 80% to 0-5mm steel slag and10% 5-10mm steel slag. About the ability of absorbing asphalt,0-5mm steel slag is 5 times as 5-10mm steel slag and is 20 times as 10-30mm steel slag.Finally, test pavement performances of ATB. We know water stability, cleavage strength, high temperature properties, low temperature properties, anti-distortion capacity and fatigue property of ATB with steel slag is better than ATB all using by limestone. So steel slag is suitable for ATB.
