The reactive power compensation and reactive power balance of power system can improve stability of the transmission system and transmission capacity, it also suppresses over-voltage. With the increasing complexity of network structure and the higher voltage level, reactive power balance is more important. Currently, the most widely used reactive power compensation devices in power system are shunt reactors, but EHV shunt reactor is not controllable. When the line fails, shunt reactors can balance the reactive power and suppress over-voltage; when the circuit is abnormal operating, the shunt reactors have no effect. On the contrary, it brings a lot of reactive power to system. The controllable reactor can give the corresponding actions based on the state of system. The controllable reactor will not work during normal state, and it gives action during abnormal state. Therefore controlled reactor meets the reality of the current needs and future trends.The biggest advantages of controlled reactor is it can suppresses unexpected situations, such as the impact of current, the rapid changes in load, and it has high-speed response characteristics.This paper introduces controlled reactor's progress in international and domestic field, focus on the controllable reactor. Then it introduces theoretical analysis of a novel of magnetic value controllable reactor, and establishes modeling in Matlab / Simulink simulation software. This paper also analysises magnetic valve Controlled Reactor's characteristics.Secondly, the paper introduces the finite element analysis, using finite element analysis to calculate the new kind of magnetic value of controllable reactor, and established the 2-D model. From 2-D model we can better understand the distribution of magnetic field lines of new kind of magnetic value controllable reactor in different working status.Finally, a novel of controllable reactor prototype is introduced, then the paper analyzed the problem of the experiment .At last the simulation results with theoretical results and measured parameters were compared, The result show that experimental datas are consistent with the theoretical value.
