Controllable reactors play an important role in filtering and compensating reactive power, it is an important part for grid and electric power transmission places. With the development of power system, implement of manufacturing technology, successful application of new electromagnetic material, the design of reactor is expected with higher technical requirements. In this paper, some studies on controllable reactor are carried out by operating principle, circuit simulation, magnetic field simulation and experiment test, the research are of theoretical guidance and practical value for engineering design and operation analysis of the controllable reactor. This paper mainly launches from the following aspects of work:Firstly, according to the basic structure and operating principle of magnetic valve controllable reactor, the electromagnetic equation is deduced and mathematical model is built. Then its main work characteristics is analyzed in detail, which provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent MATLAB simulation.Secondly, the numerical program of MATLAB based on the state equation of the magnetic valve controllable reactor calculates the current in each branch of each work state and the waveforms of voltage and current, this can validate the feasibility of the theory.Thirdly, three-dimensional finite element simulation is performed for single-phase amorphous controllable reactors by MAGNET software. By establishing simplified three-dimensional model3D time harmonic magnetic field analysis is computed to obtain the control characteristics data and three-dimensional magnetic field distribution and then compared with the experimental results.Fourthly, in order to verify the performance of the controllable reactor, control characteristics and response speed of the contrast test is amorphous controllable reactor and ultrathin silicon controllable reactor. And to explore the influence of inductance L and control characteristics of air gap under different thickness.In the last, the analysis and summary of total work has been made, and the further investigations about the controllable reactor are pointed out.
