Integrated protection is a new type of protection system emerged as development of digital substation and IEC 61850 standard. Comparing with traditional protection, integrated protection receives all information of substation at real time, therefore new protection algorithms and facilities can be developed and performance of protection can be enhanced. Researches on integrated protection nowadays are mostly at theoretical stage, or some combination of traditional protection function in practice. However, advantages of integration, information sharing and IEC 61850 modeling are not deeply taken. In this research, definition and description of protection modeling, logic node and data class are analyzed in IEC 61850 standard. Essential protection modeling method and procedure is described and essence of IEC 61850 protection modeling is pointed out. Integrated protection platform is introduced and functions according to ICE 61850 are designed, such as data storage system and basic electric quantities calculation thread. Logic nodes are mapped to program modules according to the standard and structure of integrated protection software design. Restrains on protection functions are broken through and information sharing between all protection modules is realized. Therefore new protection coordination can be discovered and performance of protection can be enhanced. Simulations are done on typical protection situations and results show all protection function working properly. Influences integrated protection brings on transmission line protection are analyzed base on information sharing and program modularization. Benefits include accelerated trip for double-circuit lines, fast trip on second stage for feeders, sensitivity improvement on stage over current protection and earth fault protection, and fast solution for trip failure. These benefits illustrate well the advantages integrated protection have on power system protection, and provide new ideas and possibilities for solution traditional protection cannot realize.
