Smart substation is an important part of Smart Grid and it represents the new trend of the future technology. This paper states the main features of the smart substation and the difference between the digital substation and smart substation. Based on the technology of digital substation and combined with the experience of the smart substations which are being built at present, this paper makes an analysis and research on the framework, configuration of automation system and typical network structure of the smart substation. Some solutions about system configuration and network scheme of smart substation are proposed in this paper, and meanwhile, the research and analysis on the technology of Ethernet and switch are made. Research on the technology and application for the intelligent component and merging unit which have the interface with the primary equipment in power system is made and a solution for implementation of the project at this stage has been proposed. And function and application prospect is described in this paper. The paper describes the superior application in detail and the implementations of the sequence control and other functions are analyzed. To address the application problem of superior application, a design concept and implementation named integrated information platform is proposed. At the same time, the solution for the application in the smart substation is put forward combined with the projects under construction. By summarizing the problems of the project, this paper provides some experience for follow-up projects of smart substation. Emphasis on smart substation engineering design, construction characteristics, the difference between conventional substation and smart substation about the future operation and maintenance are analyzed and recommendations are made, meanwhile, a method of engineering design of virtual blocks is proposed in this paper. Based on the above study and summary of the project, this paper determine the overall design principles of smart substation through the existing analysis and point out the existence of the smart substation technology issues and the current focus of development.
