Substation is an important node in the grid that undertake the assignment of converting the voltage level, bringing together the current distribution of power, and controlling power. Substation automation system is a set of computer control system in a local substation based on microelectronics, information technology, and computer technology for the purpose of operating the substation safely and reliably. With the development of electronic transformer, smart devices, and high-speed network communications, intelligent substation which is better reliable, efficient, and stable, has achieved remarkable advances. Implementation of smart substation project will strongly support safe operation of the power grid and reduce consumption of electric power enterprises.In this paper, we firstly introduced the status and trend of intelligent substation at home and abroad. Then we analyzed technical characteristics of smart substation, simultaneously compared the structure of different forms of intelligent substation comparatively. And based on the above analysis, we compared conventional substation with smart substation, as well as elaborated the advantage of intelligent substation over information sharing and network communications.Secondly, we analyzed new technologies in application of intelligent substation and compare the differences between conventional and electronic transformers. Combined with IEC61850standard, we also analyzed the new technologies used in the process layer of communication, such as priority and virtual local area network technologies.Finally, we designed the110kV grid Nantong Jiang bei according to actual conditions in Nantong, including selecting of a main transformer, choosing the main electrical equipment, and configuration of second part of the program. We devised merging unit, communication networks and other intelligent auxiliary control system on each side to complete the preliminary design of Jiang bei110kV substation.
