In the past, it used to take a long period from the R&D of the products to the mass production in most cases. The reason is all the potential problems can not be find out at the first beginning of the designing of the product. The product can be gradually improved only in the long-period processes of reciprocating circle of marketing and finding out the problems then returning and modifying the product. The root cause why it's difficult to find out the potential problems at the early stage of researching is that a lot of physical tests have to be made to the product if you want to find the potential problems and that means a lot of product models, namely the physical prototype. It's a huge burden for many enterprises because of the capital issue to produce a large number of physical prototypes at the early stage of the products R&D. They have to gradually improve the products in all aspects only after marketing the products in later stages.For those reasons with the improvement of the computer technology, comes the virtual prototyping technology. And it's popularizing in all fields with the expanding of its applications. The virtual prototype is a relative concept to the traditional physical prototype. It's a virtual product model which is produced according to all parameters in the virtual environment created in the computer as a platform. And all the tests can be made on the virtual models instead of the physical prototypes. Thus the products can be checked and improved at the early stage of the R&D of the products without producing a large number of physical prototypes so as to save a lot of money. The other advantage of the virtual model is that for modifying the products, you only need to revise the relatively parameters and the new model would be automatically produced in the computer. The R&D efficiency is greatly increased.This subject is about applying the technology of the virtual prototype to the design of the car engine. With the goal of the further research how to integrate the virtual technology into the R&D of the power machinery, we combine the relative knowledge of the power machinery with the computer technology and the virtual prototype technology together to get rid of the shortcomings of the inefficient but expensive cost, so as to find a better way. To apply the technology of virtual prototype better to the design of the car engine, this subject combines the professional knowledge with the knowledge of the virtual prototype on the basis of the previous studies. Both are finished in the computer virtual environment either the overall design of the engine or the simulation of all performances of the engine. Firstly, the 3D entity model of the 480Q engine is produced by the Pro/E 3D software with the parameters. Then, analyze the simulation of the engine performances of its kinematics, dynamics and other aspects. The performances simulation of kinematics, dynamics and other aspects is analyzed by the simulated power performance system of ADAMS so as to get the curve of the all power performances of the engine.The significance of the applying the technology of the virtual prototype to the designing the car engine is to prove that it's effective to apply this technology to the R&D of the engine. From the developing trend of the virtual prototype technology, it will completely replace the physical prototype technology to become the most important designing method in the near future.
