Herringbone gear train is an important component of transmission system in marine machinery. It had a lot of advantages such as high efficiency, compact structure and high reliability. The dynamic characteristics of the device would influence the stability and reliability of the transmission system. Therefore, the research on the dynamic characteristics of herringbone gear train had important engineering significance.First of all, the research status of gear dynamics was introduced. Transverse tooth profile of the helical gear was discussed. The models of herringbone gear, a pair of herringbone gear, single-stage herringbone planetary gear train and herringbone fifferential-star gear train were built through VBA in Solidworks. According to the theoretical calculation and analysis, the planetary gear's assembling angle was calculated on the basis of the different parameters of the model, through which the herringbone gear train could be assembled automatically.Secondly, the finite element models of single pair of herringbone gear,single-stage herringbone planetary gear train and herringbone fifferential-star gear train were built in workbench of ANSYS. Gear contacts were simulated by defining contracts between gears, based on which modal analysis was done to finite element models and both natural frequency and vibration mode were achieved. Moreover, the influence of helical angle, radial supporting stiffness and axial supporting stiffness to natural characteristic of single pair of herringbone gear were discussed. The influence of thickness of planetary carrier's plate, helical angle, ring gear's thickness, radial supporting stiffness and axial supporting stiffness to natural characteristic of single-stage herringbone planetary gear train were studied. The influence of helical angle, thickness of barrel in star-stage, radial supporting stiffness and axial supporting stiffness to natural characteristic of herringbone fifferential-star gear train were analyzed.Finally, a parameterized software for modeling herringbone gear train was designed by VBA of Solidworks. The three-dimension model of herringbone gear train could be established automatically by inputting the designed parameters according to structure sketches in this software.
