The gears transmission is an important part in the mechanical transmission system with high efficiency, compact structure and good reliability. Compared with conventional gears, herringbone gears have characteristics of high contact ratio, large size, complex mechanical property and high difficulty in studying. With the development of gear in high-speed, large-scale and heavy-load, the carrying capacity and the smooth transmission of the gear transmission system need a higher demand. Therefore, studying gear transmission system in-depth has important theoretical significance for optimizing the system parameters, improving its safety and reliability. How to create a reasonably accurate model of the system is the key to study the mechanical characteristics of the system. This thesis first introduces the overview of the gear system at home and abroad; and do some research in related theory of the finite element method and ANSYS analysis method.Secondly, equations of involute curve, fillet curve and helical curve are deduced from the principle, and get the curve equations in the same coordinate system; based on the forming principle of herringbone gears, by the use of Pro/E software, establish of accurate parametric model of herringbone gears and assemble models standardly. Therefore models can easily be regenerated to modify, and it shortens product development cycle to a certain extent, saves the cost of product development, and improves production efficiency.Last, import the Pro/E model to ANSYS, generate the finite element model and divide appropriate grid, then definite the tooth contact method between the gear to simulate gear meshing, impose appropriate loading and carry out the nonlinear contact analysis of gear. On this basis, carry out tooth surface contact stress analysis with select different friction coefficients to analyze the influence of the size of the tooth surface friction on the tooth surface contact stress. Modal analysis on the gear, extract the system’s former ten natural frequencies and vibration mode by the Block Lanczos method, the modal analysis results show that the fold vibration and radial vibration are the gear’s most important vibration. Based on the results of the analysis, propose of the method to avoid resonance.
