With the reduction of world's energy and the beginning of low carbon life, looking for new energy to replace the normal energy have been regarded as important themes in global development. Solar energy is the one of the most abundance and permanent in the world. The northwest desert region of China is a world-class solar energy resource rich area. From the angle of exploiting and utilizing resources, the development of the solar in Inner Mongolia region has the unique advantage. Solar chimney power plant system is a new way for the exploitation and utilization of solar energy. It has the advantages of simple equipment, low investment and good environmental effects. Furthermore, its rational design can achieve the favorable economic and social benefits.The article detailed designed and researched the chimney of solar chimney power plant system in Wuhai. On the spot review and research, the total annual radiation is 6000MJ/m2a, the highest temperature is 40.2℃, and annual sunshine time is 3084 hours or more. The annual sunshine time and radiation conditions are suitable for solar chimney power plant system construction.As the chimney is a key part of the solar power system, the system can generate a powerful airflow relying on chimney effect for the power plant to provide thermal power. And reasonable tower height and diameter of the chimney is the necessary conditions for normal and efficient power plant operation. Depend on the design ideas in the engineering and the characteristics of the system itself, the Inner Mongolia desert tower solar chimney power system is designed of height of 100m, diameter of 8m, the shape of straight shape.After design value is settled, a suitable numerical model about the airflow in the solar chimney power system is established, by which the common commercial CFD is usd to simulate in the system. According to the analysis, the result of simulation basically fit with the design values. Mainly because the effect of turbines is ignored.Finally, in order to validate the rationality of the design height and diameter, select a different tower height and diameter in numerical simulation when the other parameters are fixed. According to the analysis, the results showed that the height 100m, diameter 8m of the solar chimney power plant in Wuhai is the reasonable choice.
