In face of China's growing vehicle population and high number of casualties in traffic accidents, car safety has increasingly become the focus of all parties. By studying the impact of automobile beam response and energy absorption characteristics, this topic aims to explore beam components to improve vehicle design, thus improving the car safety in head-on crashes. At the same time, the study of this topic tries to provide a new solution to identify the vehicle speed in a traffic collision. The main research methods applied in the topic are the physical testing combined with finite element simulation method. Based on the falling weight impact test designed and built by our laboratory, according to the purposes of the research and under the existing conditions, a program of physical impact test is carefully designed. At the same time, a shock signal acquisition and processing system is established on the theme of virtual instrument technology, using sensors, signal conditioning instrument, data acquisition card and computer as hardware, together with LabVIEW software as the software platform. In the test, by simulating the forces acted upon the thin-walled beams using the vertical drop hammer impact, acceleration response signal of thin-walled beams in the collision is acquired and stored by the data acquisition system. By processing the collected data, we can further obtain the impulse response curve and the absorption curve of samples .Results that different parameters of thin-walled beams have different impact response characteristics and the absorption characteristics are derived by comparing and analyzing different characteristic curves of thin-walled beam of different parameters. Finally, the real tests of all tests are simulated using LS-DYNA finite element simulation software. The simulation results obtained are analyzed and compared with the physical test data. What's more, the method for improving thin-walled beam structure is studied with the use of finite element simulation. The study provides valuable information for improving the car beam energy absorption characteristics. Besides, it carries on a useful research for identifying the vehicle speed according to the energy loss in the impact in traffic accidents identification.
