Staggered truss frame system is a new steel structure style which is characterized by economy, efficiency and practicability. Domestic and overseas scholars have carried out a series of theoretical analyses, and there are also many engineering practices abroad. The task of this paper is to research the failure mode of this structure system by the action of dynamic loading, and to simulate it using cellular automata theory.In the traditional course of solving dynamic problems, the central steps are creating mathematical model (differential equation) and solving it to get dynamic response of the structure . However, the problems in the project are usually significantly complicated, and the analytical solutions cannot be obtained easily. The existing numerical computation methods , such as finite element method and calculus of differences, run into obstacles constrained by storage capacity and being unable to parallel computation . On the basis of analyzing the nature of structure's dynamic problem , this paper introduces a new theory , called cellular automata theory , into dynamic analysis of truss structures.It changes global analysis into local analysis, and ultimately achieves global balance through transmitting unbalanced force among local areas. Very low requirement for computer capacity and applicability to concurrent computer make it a new potential numerical method.This paper creates trussed construction's cellular automata model based on researching dynamic response of trussed construction. In this model, it simulates initial geometrical defect of rod by adding additional nodes and disturbing them randomly; introduces the concept of illusory transformation and replaces the real rod by several virtual rods to show losses of rod by the action of dynamic loading.Intensive study has been performed in this paper about the parameters in trussed construction's cellular automata model, such as the influence of disturbed value on elastic modulus and bearing capacity of structure; the relationship analysis of elastic modulus of model bars and the real bars; the influence of damping coefficient on vibration performance of structure, and so on. Analysis shows that it can simulate trussed construction's dynamic response under many working conditions by changing parameters in the model. At last, this paper applies the model to a real staggered truss structure's simulation, and it proves that the model created in this paper is effectual in simulating dynamic response of trussed construction.
