To ensure power system's safety and reliability, and to provide qualified power quality are two basic requirements in power system operation. As one of the significant parameters of power quality, voltage is always paid much attention. Power resources'location doesn't match the load centers in Hubei power network, most of the hydropower resources locate in the west of Hubei province, while load center in the east. As a result, the main feature of Hubei power grid is that large-capacity power transfers from west to east by long-distance transmission lines. The strategies such as installation of the compensation devices and development of the power supply in eastern Hubei have resolved the problem of the regulation of reactive power & voltage in some extent. But there are still partial areas with lower voltage at wet season and higher voltage at dry season. Accordingly, this thesis has studied the issues of reactive power & voltage characteristics in Hubei power network based on the typical operating modes in 2009.Firstly, the research background and significance of this study are introduced, the concepts related to reactive power & voltage characteristics, strategies of reactive power–voltage control and coordination are also presented in this chapter.Then the standards and criteria of design and operation in power systems both home and abroad are summarized, the criteria of reactive power & voltage used in several countries'power systems are generalized, meanwhile, the similarities and differences of these standards and criteria are compared and commented. Furthermore, the guidelines used in this study of reactive power & voltage are proposed.Subsequently, the analysis methods of reactive power & voltage in actual power systems are studied on the basis of steady power flow regulations and calculations. The regulation method of different operating modes, and the contents and specific steps of reactive power–voltage analysis are presented.Finally, this thesis has studied the reactive power-voltage characteristics of Hubei power network, calculated its power flows in several typical operating modes. Based on this work, the voltage level, balance of reactive power and dynamic reactive power reserve are analyzed. In addition, this thesis has regulated the typical operating modes and compared the reactive power & voltage conditions at pre-and post of these regulations. In the end, this thesis summarized the problems of the regulation of reactive power and voltage in Hubei power network, and put forward some according suggestions.
