Excitation controller is one of the most important automatic devices in power system, which plays an important role in power system safety and stability. Power system is a large-scale, distribution nonlinear system, but tight coupling with each part of itself. These characteristics make it difficult to get a satisfactory control effect in different operation modes of practical application. The excitation control technologies and strategies are quite mature nowadays. But to consider from coordination of the global network, there is still a shortcoming. No matter which control strategy is chosen, which based on the local control information with an aim to optimize the local area can only reflects local state. To solve this problem, this paper draws conceptions from the interventional treatment technique in medical science, and introduces this idea to the design of the excitation controller. The basic idea of this excitation controller is intervenes dispatching center information into it; changes control strategy and parameter of excitation controller online. The two essential problems of the controller are stable telecommunication of network and smooth switchover the hardware circuits, software system and mechanical structure modes, can be .This paper profound analysis the working principal of the excitation controller and focus on the PID+PSS excitation controller and the optimal excitation controller, also figure out the shortcoming of the excitation controller in the practical use. Base on the analysis, this paper fulfill the hardware circuit and software system design. On hardware it complete the main control module, analog input module,switch signal input module, synchronous signal module , frequency measuring module and communication module based on TCP/IP protocol. On software, it design the main program , all the subprogram and the program flow chart. This paper present a novel mechanical structure mode of the excitation controller, which fully considered the requirement of the electrical and mechanical aspects, and with strong anti-interference ability, can be easily installed and maintenance.
