An excitation controller, as a vital part of synchronous generator, is very important to the safe operation of generator and the stability of power system. Adjusting excitation is one of the most economic and effective control measures in improving the security, stability and quality of power system. In addition to asking excitation controller is a high-tech performance and reliability, we also need complete control protection. Excitation controller can process automatically in a variety of non-normal conditions without human intervention. Excitation controller needed to receive the operational control and adjustment instructions under the computer monitoring network, while the excitation system state information can be sent to computer monitoring net. Thus, with the rapid development of digital controlling, computer and microelectronics technology, synchronous generator excitation system using digital controller has become a trend.With the development of power system automation, a lot of new microcontrollers was adopted as the core of excitation,for instance single-chip processor,digital signal processor and so on.The applying of these microcontrollers not only enhanced the system performance, but also made it possible to expend many communication function. The development of DSP based on DSP theory and algorithm.It is used to deal with all kinds of real digital signal.TMS320F2812 is the newest CPU which is specially used for motor controlling.This paper studied the application of communication function in an excitation controller based on TMS320F2812. Firstly, we discussed the development of Excitation control technology and it's communication technology synthetically, and summarized it's limitation. According to the extend of power system automation , it is needed to put forward a new design with DSP and other communication. At the body part of this paper, we have studied the exhaustive blueprint and it's realization, including the hardware design and firmware design of field equipment, and also studied the main method of monitoring software development of upper PC. The three points mentioned cover many technological details, especially for the hardware designing,which involved in more detail.This paper not only studied the design technology of DSP, but also gave a complete research for an excitation control system based on DSP. The technologies discussed in the paper may be useful for the development of other communication system based on DSP.
