Tunpu in Anshun of Guizhou province is a unique ethnic village formed in the process of stationing land in Ming dynasty, and after 600 years of evolution, the culture of Tunpu is a special system dominated by jiangnan culture. Along with the national policy favoring the western regions and the new rural construction widely carried out, Anshun is confronting with an unprecedented opportunity for development. However, because of the understanding of Tunpu's courtyards not fully grasped and lack of detailed first-hand information, the survival and development of the traditional courtyards have faced crisis. Under the circumstance, how to master the main physical characteristics and cultural connotations, protect the particular architectural form of residence and living culture and apply them appropriately to the present construction is the key issue focused in this paper.Grounded on field research, the paper does detailed research on Tunpu's courtyards. The first chapter narrates the research background, objectives, significance, content and methods. The second chapter refers to the definition of related conception, explanation of historical background and events, while summing up the protection and utilization of residential research results. The third chapter studies the origin and development of Tunpu's courtyards, relates them and describes the cultural origins and clues of development linked by time. Meanwhile, it analyzes the main factors influenced in present day. The fourth chapter, based on the first-hand information of research, has displayed both material and immaterial characteristics such as the unit courtyard in Tunpu, combination pattern and residential culture by large quantity of maps and photographs. Established on the previous discussion, the fifth chapter does analysis on the protection and utilization of Tunpu's courtyards and put forward the basic principles and approaches to achieve the goal. At the same time, it constructs the new courtyard pattern suitable for modern life in Tunpu so as to provide reference and new ideas for protection and utilization of traditional courtyards in Tunpu. Finally the sixth chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes and complements the purpose and result of the whole research.
