Nowadays, with such factors as the rapid population growth, the sharp resource decrease, the ecological imbalance and the severe environmental damage, the problems between human survival and development and global environment have been greatly intensified. Ecocrisis may be triggered at any moment. In order to mentain a "sustainable" life for human being, American Italian architect Pa OuluoSuolie Rui proposed the concept of eco-architecture. In 1981, the 14th UIA Warsaw Declaration defined that "architecture is a comprehensive art and science for mankind to establish a living environment ", thus officially introduced architecture into the phase of "ecological architecture". Such outcomes derive not only from the cross-penetration of ecology (including social ecology, urban ecology, etc.) and architecture, but also from the larger integration of multi-disciplinary natural science and social science, such as aesthetics, history, psychology and other disciplines. With his keen observation, Tom Mayne, winner of the 2005 Pritzker Architecture Prize, captured this atmosphere and extracted the heterogeneous and symbiotic features in ecological thinking and processed them into his own main context of architectural design. This approach made him get rid of the phenomenon of homogenization, sought again and generate a new artistic direction from the diversity of traditional culture, and so forth endowed individual differences and diversity to his artistic creation.Tom Mayne regarded his architectual theory as ways of observing, reflecting, questioning and accommodating the world, and also considered the heterogeneous and symbiotic thinking as the origin of his architectual creation. During his observation of the world he took a series of complex or conflicting tension states as the entry points and looked into the related heterogeneous and symbiotic phenomena in nature, society and technology, and thus confirmed the universality of the existence of heterogeneity. In his reflection of the world, by using digestion approach, Tom Mayne digested the heterogeneous limits in space, place, type, structure and so on, through which he expressed his yearning for freedom and openness and his thinking on heterogeneous and symbiotic idea. While from his question and accommodation to the world, Tom Mayne interpreted the heterogeneous and symbiotic thinking as a neutral phenomenon in architecture. The article can be divided into the following three aspects to discuss its neutralization, namely, the place spirit of self-discipline, the mutual profitability of symbolic thinking, and the structural logic of decorationBorrowing ideas from the modern architectural historian of West Ferry Gideon, Tom Mayne viewed symbol, transparency and abstractness as the source of art creation. During the symbiotic fragmentation and integration, through his abstractive treatment of geometry, and the bionic and simulation operation of structure and morphology, he introduced the heterogeneous elements into the architectural design for the homogeneity of the heterogeneous elements in the place. In the construction of morphology, he made use of transparency as a means of juxtaposition and interpenetration of the heterogeneous space to constitute a form of blending space network for the homogeneity of the heterogeneous space. The symbiosis of abstract and symbol was a main expression of ideas like people's worldview and philosophy concept in the period of symbolism. Tom Mayne abstracted the thoughts and philosophy ideas emerging from time life into physical form, and then derived a series of structural elements from the computer to achieve the homogeneity of the heterogeneous architecture structure, so that provided structure and decoration with multiple connotation.Tom Mayne attempted to combine and deliver those views which were considered mutually exclusive, such as reality and illusion, existence and possibility, and order and disorder, etc. Thus the heterogeneous and symbiotic thinking generated the trait of contradictoriness. In the natural rhythm of heterogeneous blend, he integrated the heterogeneous places into the building structure, then juxtaposed elaborately these heterogeneous elements to enable their self-conscious reconciliation and harmonious combination, and so that actualized in sensory their contradictive expressions in parts and whole. Under the guidance of the spacial diversity, fuzziness and ambiguity of the media space in isomeric forms, he expressed its incompatibility of isolation and interaction by connecting distinctively the elements of heterogeneous space in forms of clusters, interlacement and fluxion. The significance constitute of the connections between different rules referred to his use of shape, color, dimensions and other techniques of expression. By linking these seemingly out-of-order forms of structure together in order, the integration of structure and architecture could be achieve dynamically. Meanwhile, the close combination of decoration, material properties and structure realized the contradictive unification between the architectural designability and ornamentality.Tom Mayne has been committed to absorbing the counter-part in the common elements of the traditional creative techniques, and expressing them harmoniously into the architectural forms through integrating approach to make his buildings maverick. In his philosophy, universality denied the unique substances in respective environment, and specificity operated in the isolated environment. Neither of them was complete, and his task was to combine both. Therefore, as Tom Mayne's biggest feature in his creation, heterogeneity was a positive response to the world issues such as the adaptation and protection of natural ecosystem, and the creation of physical, biological and social environments which are appropriate for human existence and behavior development. As a result of that, the heterogeneous thought represented the characteristics of times as well.
