RMB is China's legal currency , Notes contain a variety of security information.The serial-numbers of paper currency are unique, and they are different from each other. So we can make use of computer vision technology to develop a intelligent paper currency identification system, to identify the number of paper currency automatically and confirm the identity of paper currency so can estimate the circulation of paper currency. Meanwhile, it can be used to verify the paper currency weather it's authentic or not. The supermarket or bank can use the identification and storage of the paper currency serial number to find out the salesman or teller who accept forged note. In this paper, we put forward a paper currency identification system based on FPGA, complete the hardware of the system and realize the detection of paper currency image in computer.The main work includes:Propose a overall design concept of a FPGA-based serial-number-identification system, design the overall system structure. We adopt FPGA as master control chip, adopt USB as data transmission interface, adopt CMOS as Image sensor to realize the image acquisition. Meanwhile we also did some research in information collection and processing methods. We complete the hardware and software design of serial-number of paper currency identity system according to the function of each chip selected, including FPGA core board and CMOS sub-board. The system adopt two camera to collect the paper currency image. The first camera collect the entire paper currency image, the second camera collect the key part paper currency image. We also made research to the method of image collection and image processing.Choose LED as a light source, according to the analysis of uniformity of illumination, we use LightTools to design the arrangement of LEDs and use DXP to draw the light source module circuit, and produced a light board.Complete the software of the paper currency image collection and detection system. We use VerilogHDL to complete the logic design in FPGA in the Quartus II environment, including CMOS initialization module, timing control module, SRAM control module and the USB interface module, to realize the control of the whole system to ensure the stability of data transmission. Compile the image acquisition program in VC++ 6.0 environment, it can connect USB devices to display and store the image. We also use a algorithm to transfer the Bayer format image into a color image. According to the analysis of several common methods of character recognition, we put forward a method of character-based structure characters recognition to the Arabic numbers and upper English character, the method is fast and meet the requirement of the system.Use SolidWorks to design the 3D-appearance of the system, set up the experimental platform and do experiments to paper currency image acquisition and serial-number identification with the verification ratio of 93%.
