The Pioneer Of Chinese Education Of Architecture

Huanan Gui (1876-1961), a very influential architectural educator and engineer in the history of m odern Chinese education of architecture. He went to France to study civil engineering in 1904,as th e first Chinese student of the Travaux Publics. Af ter returning China in 1910 Hua Nangui served as the chief engineer of the Ministry of Traffic, the chief eng ineer of Beijing- Hankou railway , the chief engineer of Beijing-Shenyang Railway and the secretary for public works and other city functions of Beijing, on the other hand , he put a lot of effort into education, He was the founder of Civil En gineering department of Be ijing Jiaotong University.In 1929 ,He became the Department Chairman of Architecture of Art Colleg e in Beijing University, In 1933 he as president of Hautes Etudes I ndustrielles et Commerc iales a created the Department of Architectural Engineering. Hua Nangui wrote many teaching materials, and in-deep stduied of Chinese and W estern architecture. He advocated the combination of theory and practice. His contribution involving water conservancy , municipal engineering, bridge, building codes and other p ublic welfare undertakings.
