Wenchang of Hainan Province is one of the most well-known home lands of Hainan's Overseas. On this land, there're commercial streets existing in town, and villas of rich Hainan's Overseas in countryside, both with a unique style from the pass colonies of Southeast Asia. Hainan earned its fame by its magnificent natural views; but the history of its businessmen was neglected. Their legacy, including material and spiritual, began to be studied and published only several years ago. As for the historic architecture, standing in all seasoned appearance, is about to disappear during the fast development of town.The Street Shengli in Puqian Wenchang has the significant spot in the town's history, its architectures and surroundings are seasoned but generally maintained well. This dissertation takes Street Shengli as research object, studying its architecture and culture, and aiming to conclude its characters and to support the protection in future.This dissertation contains 3 parts. The first part contains Chapter 2, cutting in from the business culture, explains the reasons that generated the commercial streets in hometowns of Hainan's Overseas. Chapter 2 issues the history of the late 19th century to the early 20th century, when the people went Southeast Asia, rendering the development of their unique cultures and economic.The second part contains Chapter 3 & 4, explaining the reasons that formed the style of this street. Chapter 3 depicts the building progress of Street Shengli and studies on its aesthetics and street spaces. Chapter 4 studies on the architecture, analyzing their facades decorating and comparing with the similar style of the pass colonies in Southeast Asia.The third part concludes the unique characters of Hainan Nanyang style, and the differences from the Southeast Asian where it originated from.
