The spatial pattern in resource-based mountain cities has become the bottleneck of its development, and the altering of its industrial structure requires optimization in spatial pattern simultaneously. It is believed that the spatial structure in those cities has evolved due to certain factors such as terrain, resource distribution, socio-economic, ecological environment etc, and it also displays diverse pattern modes with regard to its developing phrase. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the spatial evolution mechanism as well as the dynamics which acts as a decisive factor. The main body of this paper can be divided into four major sections.Firstly, based on the study of the spatial structure in resource-based mountain cities, the paper has analyzed its morphology meticulously, and then categorizes them into different modes.Secondly, based on SWOT analyzing, the paper discusses the spatial structure evolution mechanism in the following aspects, industrial and economic restructuring, function changes, ecological and landscape.Thirdly, the paper has concluded four distinguished structure mode, these are scattered point-mode, single-core single-axis polarization mode, and the proliferation of multi-core multi-axis-type mode and multi-core network-based mode, and then it discussed the content, suitable object and the regular pattern based on methodical studies on cities alike throughout the nation.Fourth, after analyzing the evolution progress and the decisive factors, the paper discussed the evolution patterns in Jincheng, Shanxi prov. in two different perspectives, and finally proposed the structure mode and the optimization strategies respectively.
