The research on particle damper, the concept of which has already been proposed in 1960s, has reached a plateau and no matter in experiment or numerical simulation, it's not complete. However, from 1990s, this method has been applied to attenuate amplitude in area of Aero-Space and mechanism, so that the vibration level of many mechanical instruments and vehicle has got greatly reduced. This years, researchers of Civil Engineering brought particle damper into the area of construction and structure based on its excellent attenuation performance. Situation of research and application on particle damper has been summarized in this article home and abroad, meanwhile, its attenuation mechanism and performance has been researched using the method of theory and experiment, main tasks include these aspects as follows:1. Advantages and disadvantages of its performance emerged through analysis based on summarizing kinds of dampers present home and abroad. According to the results on particle damper already existed in all fields, we obtained its excellence and research direction in the field of Civil Engineering;2. Because of imperfect theory of particle damper, based on theory of discrete element method, motion equation,dissipation energy formula and efficacy index of particle damper has been summarized preliminarily;3. Using several software, such as ANSYS LS\DYNA,PFC3D, to simulate PD. Applicability of these software on the task has been discussed, eventually, we use'matlab'to analyze attenuation performance of PD in single-degree structure under forced vibration (including seismic wave), because efficacy index of traditional dampers is not able to be used to evaluate PD's attenuation capacity, we proposed'bi'to substitute, which is the ratio of dissipation energy with dampers and without. Under this condition, we considered influence rules of quality ratio, particle size, friction efficiency, collision route, natural vibration period, seismic amplitude and frequency spectrum feature on PD;4. Based on experiment designation and theory already existed, we took an auto-oscillation experiment of single-degree structure, considered the influence of initial displacement, quality ratio, particle size, filling rate, friction efficiency, collision route, natural vibration period and layout of PD on the single-degree structure, and results has been matched to find the law, eventually, we found the inflexion of performance, so that the initial range has been supplied for further experiment and analysis.
