As a new technology of passive vibration control, the particle damping technology appeared and developed in the field of vibration control in 1990s. The principle of this technology is very simple. It is to add the particles into the existing or additional cavity of the vibration member. The mechanical energy will be converted into sound energy and thermal energy through the collision and friction between the particles or between the particles and the vibration member at the time of structural vibration. Then the damping effect will be produced. Meanwhile, the momentum interaction between the particles and the vibration member will also have a function of suppressing vibration. Particle damping has a good application prospect as it possesses a lot of advantages, for example, extensive application range, minor alteration to the original structure, small added mass produced by it and obvious damping effect, etc.In recent years, due to the high-frequency vibration damping performance of particle damping under the bad environment, it has already been realized in the field of aviation and automobile machinery, etc. It also plays important role in the vibration damping control of many large mechanical of equipment. However, because of the complexity and randomness of the vibration mechanism of the particle system, the emulation analysis and experiment conducted on particle damping towards the structural damping are far from perfect. On the basis of summarizing the research conducted on particle damping and its application situation at home and abroad, this thesis made a simulated analysis on the vibration damping performance of particle damper with the application of discrete element software, PFC3D. The cantilever beam model with particle dampers was established. The influence of several factors such as the filling rate, particle material, particle size, installation position of particle dampers, etc. to the vibration damping performance of cantilever beam was analyzed. Moreover, plenty of random vibration tests of cantilever beam with particle dampers were conducted to study the vibration damping effects of particle damper on cantilever beam. The research shows that:Different factors have different damping effects on particle damper. For the particles with different materials, those with higher density have better damping effect. The damping effect will be the best when the filling rate is in a moderate level (78%-80%). The damping effect of the particle damper will not be good if the particle size is too big or small. Only when the particle is in a moderate size (4mm), the damping effect will be the best. The larger the initial displacement is, the better the damping effect will be. The location of damper also has influence on the damping performance of the particle damper. The damping effect will be better when the damper is closer to the end of the cantilever beam.
