The aging of population has become a worldwide trend of the changing age structure, as the main part of outdoorspace activities, the demand of the elderly for urban parks are growing. In addition, with the rapid development ofthe city, the phenomenon of " contention between green and vehicles" is not uncommon. The originally notenough outdoor space is becoming more precious, these problems all lead to the supplement of the number of cityparks. Some of the existing parks, with the problems of location, management and design, are unattractive to theresidents. So there is an increasingly demand of their environmental quality. In the face of the growing population of the elderly, they have which kind of needs with the city parks? How cancity parks to use a low-cost, high-return way to respond to the physiological and psychological changes in theelderly? What projects are now being implemented can be a good solution to this problem in the internationalarena? This paper argues that the characteristics of the elderly and the construction of a small park has some natural link, this link allows a small park not only has a unique contribution to the adaption of the old but also has a positivemeaning to the city’s image. Furthermore, small parks are economical, they are easy to be implemented in thespace and are more appropriate to human scale.People seem to have a natural dependence to small spaces. This article mainly want to illustrate the small park has a unique advantage in serving the elderly and to findmethods and principles to build a small park according to the physiological and psychological changes of theelderly. It is worth mentioning that the overwhelming majority of cases which I selected are small parks, andsmall-scale urban intervention. They are in the scope of the city park and update techniques, rather than aspecialized space like nursing home. However, specialized space has significance in the design of small parks. Sothe section of the design has been involved in this article. In this paper, the design of a small park use the elderly as a starting point, but as for the urban open space, it isalso for all ages of the community. Because the elderly don’t have an antagonistic relationship with thechildren, the youth, and the middle age. They are contact entirety.Furthermore, the dependences and requirementsfor the design of young people are not as high as the elderly. So using the elderly as a starting point does not affectthe use of other people. It will be easier for the public to use and make the city more attractive.
