This paper does research on the factors which can influence key performance specifications such as lumen efficiency and life of fluorescent lamps. Product research is carried out widely and68samples of four commonly used types are collected from numbers of enterprises. Data of performance items, including efficacy, lumen maintains, chromaticity coordinates, color rendering index, which can effectively characterize the quality, is obtained by testing. It is confirmed that these fluorescent lamps have quality problems of low energy efficiency and short lamp life by analyzing this data.Materials and process factors which cause these problems are considered. Materials factors which have large effect are phosphors, glass tubes, cathode electron powder, tungsten, mercury, inert gases and so on. Production processes are phosphor slurry preparation, protective film coating, phosphor coating, tube baking, cathode electron powder coating, exhausting and several others. And the following factors that have the biggest effect on lumen efficiency and light-declining can be improved: phosphors, tube baking and tube bending.Experiments lead to the conclusion that lumen efficiency and other quality indicators can be improved by increasing high temperature performance of blue phosphors, adding inert gas before bending tube, keeping the furnace temperature constant and other methods.
