| Both Benism and Buddhism are believed by Tibetan and their ancestor Tubo. These two religions combat and coexist with each other since the 6th-7th century AD. What is more, the factors of political and military affairs, wax and wane of tribes, cultural evolution in Tibet, made them inter-penetrate and integrate with each other and created a unique religion of Tibetan-Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhism architecture is also a very important component of traditional Chinese architecture.Monk’s Dormitory is not only a part of Tibetan Buddhism architecture but also carried the Tibetan religion and Monk’s living experience from ancient into modern society. The design of variety of space, pleasant of human scale and solemn and simplicity is worth to learn from, however, it is hard to preserve because it’s not worth mentioning in the environment of divinity above humanity. Unfortunately, most of the books classified it as part of residential buildings and ignored its particularity-the Tibetan culture and living philosophy it represents.After the information-gathering, the experience of professional design projects and the process of accumulation and data analysis, this article based on the deep survey of four characteristics of temples in Tibetan autonomous region, concludes and studies the space characteristic of Monk’s Dormitory. By recording and comparing its history condition with current situation, this article summarizes its space characteristic and analyzes its strengths and weaknesses. This can also be used as a reference of the renewal of monk’s dormitory in the future and explorations of feasible design methods. |
