The connection of solid-web telescopic jib depends heavily on the quality of welds, which tremendously determined the performance of telescopic jib. For welds under long-term repeating loads, potential internal cracks are not easy to be detected,so safety hazard does exist with telescopic jibCurrently the research of strength of welds in solid-web telescopic jib remains improperly insufficient, especially the research of flawed weld possesses many shortcomings. So to make up for these insufficiencies studies of weld failures are definitely imperative. Prediction of critical failure values of welds under typical working conditions are also required to ensure normal production,to avoid major accidents, and ultimately to reduce unnecessary economic lossesTo solve the problems in question, weld models are built to simulate the performance of welds under required working conditions. Traditionally weld strength is represented by the maximum stress of the corresponding section, which may result in risky or distorted results. Weld defects are also neglected in conventional studies. To avoid these weaknesses, a novel approach is proposed in building weld models. through comparison of different modeling method. A simplification of weld shapes, these models simulate the defects of weld using the Life and Death technology of ANSYS software.Through comparison of the simulation and the theory, evidences are collected to prove the validity of a simplified weld model and the effectiveness of simulating weld defect via Life and death element technology. The research can be applied to predict critical failure values of welds under typical working conditions and to assess chances of weld failure. Through analysis of finite element models of weld defects, it is discovered initial failure point, rather than crack lengths influence to a greater extent the performance of weld strength. Simulation of weld defects can also cast light upon major factors of accidents, provided working conditions of telescopic jibs in accident.
