Since the 20th century, compared with the other components of city design, the design of residential areas should have stimulated more potential of settlements, but this has rarely been seen in practice. With good design methodology and theory, a residential area can become a living environment full of diversity and excitement. But in fact, in many residential areas, we feel monotonous and boring. They rarely provide the residents with the possibility of various functions. Therefore, I started to collect extensively the research result relating to residential areas, and try to make research of urban residential areas based on the architectural typology. This paper deals with the reconstruction of urban residential areas based on the architectural typology. The purpose of residential area design is to enable people to have a good living environment and high quality of life. In the design of residential areas, typology realizes the control over the form of residential areas through the selection and conversion of different types of buildings and spaces, and also provides methods and means of solving the contradiction between the traditional and the modern residential areas. The knowledge of a residential area is the starting point of its design. Typology provides a tool for reading a living space, but also includes a method for improving the living conditions of a residential area. Through extensive analysis and summary of residential areas, we can employ the ideas of typology in the design of residential areas. It should be noted that the paper concerns the living environment under a specific building volumetric fraction. David Rudlin and Nicholas Falk had made a case study on Kowloon, Hong Kong (north of Hong Kong Island). The residential density in Kowloon is very high, approaching 1250 dwelling units per hectare, while in Los Angeles the number is 15. The paper discusses the mid-level residential density between 30-450 dwelling units per hectare.Typological design approach starts from socio-cultural and historical tradition. It attaches importance not only to pure form and function; it also tries to explore the deeper meaning beyond the form. China is a country with a long history and rich culture. The essence of history and culture should be reflected in the diversified types. To inherit and carry forward the national tradition and culture, you need to resort to the typological thinking and to apply the typological thinking in the space reconstruction. Making the past serve the present-day needs, absorbing the essence and discharging the dross, that is a meaningful design of modern residential areas.
