Scientists were inspired by radar after the Second World War, and they tried to design a radio telescope with the structure of radar. After then, the radio astronomy has been born. Astronomical observers research objects with radio receptions, observing all the objects throughout the universe, including all celestial bodies from the solar system to the various objects in the galaxy, and then observing the target farther away. Radio astronomy is a discipline that researches various types of celestial with radio telescope systems. The astronomical observation equipment is constantly upgrading with the development of science and technology. In particular, it could be able to creat new opportunities for radio astronomy technology because of the continuously improving technology. The FAST project is the world’s largest radio telescope which is being built. The task is put forward and become a part of the the previous research and technical exploration for the FAST project.This subject research is made up of two main parts. One part is intended to analyses the effects of ADC quantization for HI observation, and the other part is intended to design and implement a spectrum terminal on the CASPER digital hardware platform.At first, the subject content and the target of this task were researched, and the feasibility of the target was analyzed. Then the paper tried to talk about the effect of the ADC quantization for the spectrum observation. This issue was researched and analyzed by theoretical inference and the actual observation data was processd to prove the correctness of the conclusion. After that the paper introduced the theoretical background knowledge of digital signal processing, mainly about the sampling theory, the Fourier transform and the fast Fourier transform theory, the polyphase filter bank technique. Then it described the technique of designing a spectrum terminal on the hardware platform by the software platform. At last, the HI observation using the designed spectrum terminal above was successfully achieved.
